Shogun Ruling the Emmys But Fans Still Unhappy

Shogun definitely made history with over 14 emmys racked up under its name. But is it true that history itself has been the weak point of the shogun? The audience has been quite divisive over what appears to be a masterpiece at first sight. It’s not like Shogun is not receiving enough admiration. But the series has also received its fair share of criticism from the audience as well.

Starting off with the suicide problem. Now, in all honesty, honor over anything else is the basic idea about any noble warrior class. The honor once shattered cannot be regained. But it wasn’t really the matter of life and death. Samurais didn’t just commit suicide every now and then. And most, if not all, of such deaths are portrayed as the practice of Seppuku and Harakiri, which feel like extra edginess added specifically for shock value.

If that was not enough, the samurais in Shogun go around with a license to kill. Which is quite demeaning, given that this is horribly inaccurate. A samurai had to follow a particularly strict code and were not impervious to reprisals of such actions.

It is quite enigmatic how the series has not received any culture police going after it. The audience still loves this series nevertheless. Not just that, the series is doing immensely well in Japan, which makes sense that the showrunners even after the inaccuracies have kept clear of any appropriation. Which explains the hype for the second season. Shogun is available to stream on both FX and Hulu.
