Applause Entertainment recently took to Twitter to announce that the shooting for their upcoming first feature film ‘The Rapist’, which is being produced in collaboration with Quest Films, has been wrapped up.
The Aditya Birla Group’s content creation studio further apprised that the sensitive and unflinching drama starring the impeccable Arjun Rampal, Konkona Sen Sharma and Tanmay Dhanania have been directed by the incredible Aparna Sen.
After making her acting debut in Satyajit Ray’s short film ‘Teen Kanya’, acclaimed filmmaker Aparna Sen went on to make her directorial debut in 1981 with the National Film Award-winning film ’36 Chowringhee Lane’.
‘The Rapist’ marks her sixth collaboration with her daughter and adept actress Konkona Sen Sharma. The duo’s first film together was the critically acclaimed ‘Mr. and Mrs. Iyer’, co-starring Rahul Bose.
Arjun Rampal, who had completed shooting for Sen’s film in Delhi a few days back, called it an intense and fulling journey and was all praise for the mother-daughter duo. Rampal was last seen with Konkona Sen Sharma in 2013 film ‘Meridian Lines’, which also featured Late Irrfan Khan.
‘The Rapist’ is a hard-hitting film that will reportedly deal with sexual violence and restorative justice, while exploring the aftermath of a dark, violent night on the victims as well as the perpetrators of the crime. The film revolves around the three principal characters of Rampal, Konkona, and Dhanania and how their stories intersect after one horrific incident and its aftermath.
Previously, the abominable crime was sensitively dealt with by Canadian filmmaker Richie Mehta in his discomforting police procedural Netflix series ‘Delhi Crime’, which was based on a horrific real-life incident.
Another recent television show which handled the subject matter in a sensitive and sensible manner was the 2019 true-crime drama ‘Unbelievable’, which was a dramatization of a series of rapes in Washington State and Colorado.
Filmmaker Aparna Sen herself had touched upon the subject in her thought-provoking film ’15 Park Avenue’ featuring Konkona Sen Sharma. Although, unlike her forthcoming film ‘The Rapist’, the film’s primary subject matter revolved around the intricacies of dealing with a serious mental disorder ‘Schizophrenia’.
Konkona Sen Sharma will next be seen in the anthology film ‘Ajeeb Daastaans’, scheduled to release on Netflix on April 16, 2021. While Arjun Rampal is reportedly busy shooting for an explosive spy-thriller co-starring Kangana Ranaut.
The highly anticipated film ‘The Rapist’ is currently in the post-production stage.
