After having its international premiere at ‘Woche Der Kritik (Berlin Critics’ Week)’ and it’s domestic premiere at the ‘International Film Festival of Kerala’, ‘Shreya Dhanwanthary starrer short film ‘Birth’ is now coming to Disney+ Hotstar on 27th August, 2022.
‘Birth’, by critically acclaimed, young Indian filmmaker Shyam Sunder (‘Kuthiraivaal’), follows the story of an eight months pregnant a young woman Meera who enrolls into an upscale maternity centre for ‘Happy Moms’.
‘Birth’ is a 25-minute satirical feminist thriller that takes on the journey of a woman faced with motherhood, not as a choice, but as an absolute necessity for women in general. In the film, Meera (played by Shreya Dhanwanthary), who is pregnant and begins to have panic attacks and Braxton Hicks in her eighth month of pregnancy, is encouraged by her husband Sushant to join a maternity centre for mothers-to-be called ‘Happy Moms’.
Headed by matronly, domineering Mama Nithya (Lillete Dubey) it’s a place where expecting mothers come to find joy in their pregnancy. However, Meera falls in the trap of a sinister cult that changes her life once and for all. The film explores the role Indian society plays in reshaping a woman’s identity as she becomes a mother.
Boundless Media’s first international short film ‘Birth’ is directed by Shyam Sunder and produced by Natasha Malpani Oswal of Boundless Media. ‘Birth’ stars Shreya Dhanwanthary and Lilette Dubey in lead roles with Abeer Mehervish, Aanchal Chauhan, and Natasha Iyer in pivotal roles.
