Shang-Chi star Simu Liu has roasted Warner Bros for shelving Batgirl at the eleventh hour via one of his latest tweets. The studio buried the Leslie Grace starrer as “they didn’t believe in the film”. Although, many reports have disclosed that the executives were disappointed with the film’s poor test screenings. Plus, they wanted to implement their cost-saving procedures as soon as possible. All these scenarios forced the studio to axe Batgirl.
“I’m sorry to inform you guys that Disney has decided to scrap the Shang-Chi Holiday Special due to quality control concerns. I had already filmed the entire thing. I even designed an all-gingerbread Ta Lo. RIP Shang Chi and the Legend of the TEEEN GOLDEN RIIIIINGS,” Liu tweeted.
However, not everyone liked Simu Liu’s humour. Many netizens called the actor “insensitive” and reminded him that many people lost their jobs because of Batgirl’s cancellation. The Adil and Bilall directional was reportedly 90% complete and was all set to hit HBO Max later this year. Additionally, it had a big budget of $90 million. The cancellation means that WB will lose all the money they have spent on the project.
In addition to Batgirl, Warner Bros also threw Scoob!: Holiday Haunt, a sequel to the 2020 animated movie, under the bus.
Speaking of holiday specials, the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will arrive on the Disney+ streaming platform in December 2022. It stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, and many more.
Marvel Studios roped in Destin Daniel Cretton, helmer of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty some time ago. We do not know when he will start working on the Shang-Chi sequel. But we can expect Simu Liu to make an appearance in the upcoming Avengers project. Stay tuned for more updates.
