When the first glimpses and teasers of Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings hit social media, they gave rise to an entire community of naysayers who predicted that Marvel Studios was about to have its first flop in the film. They were everywhere – vlogs on YouTube, writeups in online publications, comments on Twitter and Reddit – trolls wondering about the need to have a seemingly mundane, Chinese origin lead for Marvel’s next film. Doomsday predictors had a field day, posting mildly insulting memes and creatives.
Shang-Chi had the last laugh, however. The film has won over audiences and critics, and is breaking records galore as far as Box Office collections go. Ever since its lead star Simu Liu fame spread far and wide, eagle-eyed netizens have dug up stock pictures that Simu Liu modelled for, to make quick money in his early days. The pictures are all over the internet. Rather than feel ashamed about the pictures, the man of the moment, Simu Liu himself, has turned them into memes, mocking the very trolls and haters who predicted that Shang-Chi would be a massive flop.
