Show Business is an upcoming period drama series from Netflix, part of the streamer’s content and market expansion strategy in South Korea. The show is set against the backdrop of the country’s entertainment industry from the 1960s to the 1980s. The latest cast announcement brings some of the most celebrated performers in South Korea to the show.
The series revolves around Min-ja (Song Hye-kyo), a strong and confident woman who battles the struggles of childhood to carve her career in Korea’s flourishing music industry. Song is best known for her work in Dark Nuns.
Alongside her, we will see Squid Game fame Gong Yoo, who plays Min-ja’s childhood friend, Dong-gu. Their friendship will surely be tested as they navigate the highly competitive entertainment industry together.
Cha Seung-won (Uprising) portrays Gil-yeo, a celebrated composer who knows how to create a star out of dust. Kim Seol-hyun (Light Shop) takes on the role of Min-hui, who appears to have a cutthroat rivalry with Min-ja.
The cast also includes Lee Hanee (The Fiery Priest), who will be seen playing Yang-ja, Min-ja’s mother. She was a talented artist in her youth, but the hardships of life prevented her from achieving great success in her career.
Behind the camera, Show Business has director Lee Yoon-jung (Coffee Prince) and writer Noh Hee-kyoung (Our Blues).
Show Business is a product of Netflix’s growing South Korean slate, which has reached new heights with Squid Game Season 2. However, the show has yet to receive a fixed release window. The streamer assures that the series will premiere in 2025. Stay tuned for more updates.
