Well, it seems like Jim Carrey will return in Sonic 3! Variety has reported that the Dumb and Dumber actor will come out of his acting retirement to reprise the fan-favourite character of evil Dr. Robotnik in the third Sonic instalment.
The news comes after Jim Carrey announced his retirement from acting in April last year. According to some reports, the Ace Ventura star decided to quit acting to become a full-time artist.
During the final moments of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, we see Carrey’s Dr Robotnik falling from a giant robot to the ground. Sonic uses the Chaos Emerald to gain the Super Sonic avatar and destroys Robotnik’s robot. In the movie’s post-credits scene, we do not see Robotnik’s body, which leaves an open path for Sonic 3.
The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie came out in 2020 and earned over $315 million globally. The movie’s financial success inspired Paramount to roll out its sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), which minted over $400 million worldwide. Sonic 3 is scheduled to arrive this year.
Apart from the third Sonic film, a spin-off series, Knuckles, starring Idris Elba, will also arrive on the Paramount+ streaming platform this year.
In addition to the grand return of Jim Carrey, Sonic 3 could also mark the return of James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Colleen Ann O’Shaughnessy, and Idris Elba. Stay tuned for more updates.
