Sony & Zee Merger Terminated? Reports Say

Looks like the long-stretched drama between Sony and Zee is taking final turns. When the deal is meant to be finalised then the news of termination is hovering all around. Sony Group Corp has officially terminated the proposed $10 billion merger with Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, according to reports on 22 January. The termination letter, sent early Monday, whined of non-compliance with the terms of the merger agreement. The merger between Sony and Zee has officially been called off after a 30-day grace period expired without the two companies reaching an agreement over the weekend.

The merger, which had been in the works for over two years, fell apart because the companies couldn’t agree on who should lead the combined entity.

Negotiations hit a roadblock in November when Sony insisted that its own executive should lead the merged company, not Goenka who happens to belong to Zee. N.P. Singh was promoted from Sony Group to head the merged entity but who cares now? The merger isjust waiting for official termination. The extended deadline of January 20th passed without an agreement, leading to the termination of the deal.

Sources familiar with the situation say Sony is standing firm on its decision, pointing to an ongoing investigation into alleged fund diversion involving Punit Goenka. Sony is hesitant to let Goenka be the CEO of the merged company or even have a seat on the board.

The termination letter from Sony is expected to be made public soon. This marks the end of a long negotiation process and opens a new chapter for both Sony and Zee Entertainment. The outcome will reshape their future plans in the Indian entertainment industry.
