SonyLIV heavily promoted ‘Family Aaj Kal’ and ‘Adrishyam – The Invisible Heroes’. While the former show had plenty of good performances and heart-touching moments to offer, Adrishyam turned out to be another lame and uninventive spy drama. SonyLIV spared no effort in promoting these two shows. But it was clearly visible that the streaming platform focused more on Adrishyam than Family Aaj Kal in its promotional efforts, which is understandable considering the massive star power of Ejaz Khan and Divyanka Tripathi.
Family Aaj Kal is SonyLiv’s another attempt to explore the intricacies of middle-class life, after dropping hits like Yeh Meri Family and Gullak. However, it will be too early to put the Apoorva Arora starrer in the leagues of Yeh Meri Family and Gullak. The show’s approach to exploring middle-class life is different. It is a passable effort from SonyLiv that benefits immensely from the heart-touching performances of its lead cast, particularly from Arora. However, the show’s overall structure looks inconsistent. Plus, attempts to break the fourth wall feel out of place, considering the show’s storyline and settings.
On the other hand, Adrishyam offers nothing new or innovative to the viewers. It is another stale and unoriginal take on the tired trope of Muslim terrorists threatening India. The predictable plot, uninteresting characters, and lack of action make it a forgettable series, compared to shows like Prime Video’s The Family Man. Even talents like Divyanka Tripathi and Ejaz Khan deliver average performances in this series.
Family Aaj Kal and Adrishyam were the only two shows that came out of SonyLiv’s arsenal in April 2024. And we all know which series won the battle. Stay tuned for more updates.
