SonyLIV August 2024 Report: Did Trisha’s Brinda Save The Streamer?

SonyLIV August 2024 Report: Did Trisha’s Brinda Save The Streamer?

We’re back with our monthly review of SonyLIV. The platform released only three titles in August 2024; Trisha’s Brinda (SonyLIV Original) and two licensed projects, Turbo and Red Eye. Despite its shortcomings, Brinda managed to hold its ground well and entertained the streamer’s subscribers. Mammootty’s Turbo also did the same. But Richard Armitage’s Red Eye turned out to be a glaring misstep.

SonyLIV opened its August 2024 account with Trisha’s Brinda series. While it did not break any new ground and suffered from a predictable storyline, Trisha gave one of the best performances of her career in this one. The actress looked in fine form in her first-ever female cop avatar. The scenes focusing on her camaraderie with her on-screen parents, Jaya Prakash and Aamani, are one of the brightest points of the show. Ravindra Vijay and Indrajith Sukumaran looked in fine form too. Overall, it is a satisfactory crime thriller held together by Trisha’s commanding performance.

Mammootty’s Turbo had its SonyLIV premiere on August 8th. Vysakh’s direction was praised by many critics and how he laid the foundation for a sequel. His film never lags and delivers entertainment consistently. The film also benefits from some nice emotional moments. Yes, it is not without some cliche moments, but they don’t look cringey. Turbo has all the elements of a mass entertainer!

Red Eye was another one of Sony’s licensed project releases last month. Compared to Brinda and Turbo, Red Eye turned out to be a complete disaster. This Peter A. Dowling series suffers from a derivative and unoriginal storyline and a very poor performance from the leading man, Richard Armitage. On the other hand, her counterpart, Jing Lusi looks good. The show follows a British man who is accused of murder and deported to China. The story unfolds during a long-haul flight from London to Beijing.

SonyLIV had a mixed month in August. While the shows Brinda and Turbo were generally well-received, Red Eye failed to impress viewers. Stay tuned for more updates.
