SonyLIV Begins The Hunt for Spotlight: Too Ambitious?

Sometimes, platforms don’t realise the gem they’re sitting on. And that’s been SonyLIV’s problem for a while now. While others are out there breaking records and making noise, SonyLIV seems content whispering into the void.

But The Hunt, their upcoming true crime docuseries on the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, feels different. Ambitious, politically sensitive, and rooted in one of India’s most pivotal historical events, the show has the potential to reignite national conversation. The subject matter alone could be enough to draw viewers across the political and generational spectrum.

Add to that the fact that true crime continues to be one of the most addictive genres in OTT, and you’d think SonyLIV finally has its golden ticket. But here’s the catch, it’s still SonyLIV.

A platform notorious for failing to market its strongest releases. We’ve seen this story before. Alappuzha Gymkhana got buried. Black, White & Gray: Love Kills went under the radar. And Kankhajura never even got a fighting chance. With The Hunt, they’re sitting on an explosive documentary, and if they don’t shout about it from every rooftop, someone else will steal their thunder.

Because, let’s face it, a show like The Hunt doesn’t need gimmicks. It needs visibility.

So the real question isn’t whether The Hunt can pull SonyLIV back into the spotlight. It’s whether SonyLIV finally learns to step into it.
