SonyLIV Buys Three More Malayalam Titles Amidst Market Dip

SonyLIV is leaving no stone unturned to establish itself as the top dog in the world of Malayalam OTT. The streaming service is known to promote Malayalam content more aggressively than its competitors in India. As part of its expansion efforts among the audience who love watching Malayalam content, the platform has added three more Malayalam titles to its arsenal.

The above-mentioned tweet from Sreedhar Pillai mentions SonyLIV’s recent purchase of three Malayalam titles: “Varshangalkku Shesham”, “Malayalee From India”, and “Thalavan”. This buying spree suggests SonyLIV is trying to expand its Malayalam content library.

With the market being down, SonyLIV has an opportunity to gain a larger audience by providing new and engaging content. By acquiring the mentioned Malayalam titles, SonyLIV looks to increase its subscriber base in not only Kerala but also across the country.

Jis Joy’s Thalavan (starring Asif Ali and Biju Menon) is scheduled to arrive in theatres on May 24. On the other hand, Dijo Jose Antony’s Malayalee from India (with Nivin Pauly in the lead) has struggled at the box office. The film’s worldwide collections still stand at 18.36 crores, despite receiving a decent opening of 2.90 crores on its first day. Whereas Varshangalkku Shesham (another Nivin Pauly starrer) has emerged as a box office hit, earning over 80 crores since its release.

Malayalam cinema has gained immense prominence, both on national and international levels. Mollywood has bestowed plenty of content-driven and high-quality feature projects that have also utilised realistic storytelling, socially relevant themes, and strong acting performances. This is one of the biggest reasons why Malayalam cinema resonates so strongly with the Indian audience. Stay tuned for more updates.
