SonyLIV’s Churuli In Hot Water Over “Atrocious” Language

A few weeks ago, a petition was filed against the Malayalam supernatural film, ‘Churuli‘ for its harsh language. While many from the film industry thought that this petition was ridiculous, the High Court of Kerala has officially admitted this written petition and has called the film, atrocious. On top of that, according to the CBFC AKA The Central Board of Film Certification, the SonyLIV streaming version of ‘Churuli’ is not the certified version of the film. If this statement is true, then the minds behind this psychological thriller could be in deep trouble.

While the film is filled with mystical elements and causes the viewer to question everything they see, the most prominent thing about the film is its ridiculous levels of swearing – the likes we have not seen before in a mainstream media film. While the swearing comes as a shock for many, it is mainly used to reinforce the supernatural elements of the film – at least that is what the film is trying to portray. But with the way CBFC has entered into the fray (of this situation), it could spell trouble for Lijo Jose Pellissery, Chenban Vinod Jose, S. Hareesh, Vinoy Thomas and the rest.

Almost a month back, a highly anticipated Malayalam feature film, ‘Churuli‘ released on SonyLIV. For many, this film was the next step in “evolution for Malayalam cinema” and many have been waiting for it as far back as 2018. While we do not know if this film changed Mollywood, it is indeed a unique film that has divided minds – both critics and viewers alike. The film has got moderate reviews, but for some, this film is already a cult classic.

Check out this film on SonyLIV if interested – there is likely a chance that the film will not continue to stream on the OTT platform in the future.
