‘The Hunt – The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case’ certainly appears to be SonyLIV’s biggest show of 2025 so far—or at least, that’s what its subject and promotional clips suggest. Based on the shows and movies that have come out on the streaming platform this year, ‘The Hunt’ easily takes the top spot as the most highly anticipated series. However, it has a tough battle ahead.
Compared to other OTT platforms in India, SonyLIV typically doesn’t extensively promote its shows and instead focuses more on delivering quality content. And to a noticeable extent, the platform has indeed delivered several impressive original titles since its inception.
That said, we also have to admit that SonyLIV hasn’t released a single outstanding show this year—apart from ‘The Waking of a Nation’, which received acclaim from both viewers and critics. Last year, we got some truly standout titles in the form of Freedom at Midnight, Brinda, Gullak Season 4, Undekhi Season 3, and more. But this year, the platform hasn’t quite found its spark.
Which is why the release of ‘The Hunt – The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case’ feels pretty important. This one has all the makings of a great and enjoyable series. With the talented Nagesh Kukunoor at the helm, the show features a stellar cast, including Amit Sial, Vidyuth Gargi, Sahil Vaid, Saurabh Dubey, Rama Rao Jadhav, and more. If handled well and sensibly, this series could easily become SonyLIV’s biggest hit of the year.
But ‘The Hunt’ is all set to face some serious competition.
On July 2, Prime Video will drop the Hollywood action-comedy Heads of State, starring Idris Elba, John Cena, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The next day (July 3), we’ll get the highly anticipated The Sandman Season 2 on Netflix, with Tom Sturridge returning as the fan-favourite ruler of the Dreaming—Lord Morpheus, aka Dream.
Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life, despite all the legal troubles and controversy, is expected to have a strong viewership debut on July 3 on Netflix. Then on July 4, we have Abhishek Bachchan’s Kaalidhar Laapata (ZEE5) and Priyamani’s Good Wife (JioHotstar).
All these upcoming titles are sure to give ‘The Hunt – The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case’ a tough fight. Will this Amit Sial-starrer manage to rise on its own, or will it get lost and forgotten amidst such intense competition? Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned for more updates.
