Finally the day arrived for all Suriya fans and also the genuine cinema fans. Soorarai Pottru has released mere hours ago and it’s already garnering praise from everywhere. The inspired biographical drama which is based on the life of G.R. Gopinath was originally scheduled for a theatrical release, but due to shut theatres the movie was postponed many times due to ample issues and controversy around it.
Before Soorarai Pottru arrived, the situation of OTT platforms regarding the direct releases were frowned upon. With many of the big films like V on Amazon Prime Video, Laxmii Bomb on Disney+Hotstar, Penguin on Amazon Prime Video, Miss India on Netflix didn’t perform well. It was the small/niche movies that were garnering success.
Seeing that no big stars were getting hits in the small screens, things were getting a bit tense for the OTT platforms. Barring Gunjan Saxena, Lootcase and CU Soon no major releases performed that they were supposed to.
Then arrived Soorarai Pottru which not only gave Amazon Prime Video something to rejoice, it also gave hope to other major platforms which were struggling with their major releases. Soorarai Pottru is one of the biggest Tamil movies of the year and that coupled with the star factor of Suriya, if this film would have failed then there would have been serious discussions regarding the future direct to OTT releases. But since the movie has done well both with the audience as well as the critics, this has given a ray of hope for all the other streaming platforms.
But seeing that, star factor hasn’t completely vanished from OTT market, the big future releases will be keen to replicate the success of Soorarai Pottru. Will they come out as winners? Time will tell.
