Space Sweepers: The Beginning of Netflix’s Aggressive Asia Plan?

When Netflix said that they will be investing a huge chunk of fortune in developing content in Asia, they were absolutely not lying. Netflix’s upcoming movie ‘Space Sweepers’ is proof of it. Releasing on the 5th of February, Space Sweepers will become the first Korean space movie to be ever released. Not only that, it is said to be one of Korea’s most heavy budget movie.

Netflix earlier in their year ending reports for 2020 has mentioned that a huge part of Netflix’s subscriptions come from Asia, most specifically India to be precise. The Asian content that made a huge impact in 2020 were Indian originals, Korean Dramas and movies along with Japanese Anime. In our earlier reports of stating Netflix’s plan for content in the coming future, we have mentioned how they are aiming to keep their grip intact into the Asian market by producing more Korean original movies and dramas, Indian originals that are more regional based and even producing their own fleet of Japanese anime.

Now coming back to what Space Sweepers is all about, this movie will take into the future, not just any future, but the future of space. The movie will showcase a team that travels into space and collects space junks to make a living and as they keep doing their jobs, they come across a certain enemy that could mean the end of the earth. Now it is up to them, to leave their jobs as scrappers and hooligans and instead, become the saviour of the earth. The movie is set in the year 2092.

That being said, the movie boasts an impressive ensemble cast. The cast includes Descendants of the Sun fame Song Joong-ki in the lead. Joining him is Kim Tae-ri, Jin Seon-hyu, Yoo He-jin, and Richard Armitage. The movie is directed by Jo Sung-hee, who earlier directed the blockbuster hit ‘A Werewolf Boy’.

It is just the beginning of 2021; it will be interesting to see how great Asian content will be in the coming years. Will it be like how Netflix has mentioned it to be? Only time and, well also fans will be the judge of that.
