Netflix has released the ensemble poster and a disturbingly thrilling trailer for its upcoming Korean series ‘Squid Game’. Written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk (‘The Fortress,’ ‘Miss Granny’, ‘Silenced’), ‘Squid Game’ will premiere on Netflix globally on 17th September, 2021.
The main poster of ‘Squid Game’ has a beautiful warm backdrop of a field under the open blue sky which gets juxtaposed with the strikingly shocking visual of dead bodies of the contestants who lost the game lying on the ground. On the other hand, the contestants who survived look all fearful and alert with a strange giant robot girl standing in the field behind them.
Coming to ‘Squid Game’s’ main trailer, it begins with the gathering of 456 cash strapped desperate individuals struggling in their own lives, who are all brought to a strange place with storybook colors and visuals. While they are all unconscious they are dressed in the same green track pant and jacket with a white t-shirt inside.
Though they are all told at the beginning of the game itself, “If you do not wish to participate, please tell us now”, nobody raises an objection as they are lured by the chance of winning a huge prize money. The first game to begin with is called red light, green light and what seemed to start like a child’s play soon transforms into a chaos filled scene full of shock and screams. But the game needs to finish and only those who survive will move on to the next step.
With no choice to not play the game, contestants soon realise that they only way to both stay alive and win the money is to be part of the best team and win every game at any cost. For this the participants even resort to putting the lives of other participants on the line. The quest to find out who survives these deadly games and win the prize money will make ‘Squid Game’ a sure shot riveting watch.
As per Netflix, director Hwang Dong-hyuk introduces ‘Squid Game’ as “one giant allegory that expresses the capitalist society of contemporary times”. The intense suspense filled series makes an indirect reference to the stories of the participants as to how they are living a dilapidated life due to cutthroat competition in the modern society. A stark comparison is created by showing children’s games enjoyed during childhood and altering them into something much more extreme and competitive.
Produced by Siren Pictures Inc., ‘Squid Game’ on Netflix stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Oh Young-soo, Wi Ha-Jun, Jung Ho-yeon, Heo Sung-tae, Tripathi Anupam and Kim Joo-ryoung.
‘Squid Game’ will launch globally only on Netflix on 17th September, 2021.
