Well, well, well! Squid Game is finally over with its highly anticipated Season 3. But is it really over? It seems like Netflix has grand plans for this franchise, which has emerged as nothing short of a global phenomenon. In case you’ve been sleeping under a rock, Season 3 ended on a highly divisive note. However, there was a pretty good surprise in the third season’s finale.
SPOILER WARNING!
Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett appears in the Season 3 finale. Yes, no one saw that coming. Blanchett’s appearance in the final episode of the latest season seems to tease, or even set up, the long-rumoured potential US spin-off.
The final moments of Season 3 transport us to Los Angeles, California. Here, the Front Man delivers Player 456’s items and gold card, and we’re introduced to a significant new character played by Blanchett. Credited with a “Special Appearance,” she echoes the “Recruiter” role seen in Seasons 1 and 2, challenging a homeless man, played by Jesse Saler, to a game of Ddakji, where the loser faces a harsh slap.
Netflix has yet to officially announce a US-based spin-off of Squid Game, nor has the platform disclosed anything about Cate Blanchett’s involvement in this rumoured project.
The deadly games ended with Gi-hun’s sacrifice. But that doesn’t mean these types of games aren’t being orchestrated in other parts of the globe, like the United States. This rumoured US-based spin-off could take the Squid Game franchise in new and unexplored directions.
Fight Club fame David Fincher is rumoured to be attached to the US spin-off. If that turns out to be true, it’s safe to say the spin-off project is in great hands.
While details are still scarce, the project is reportedly confirmed as a series that will extend the original story, not remake it. Dennis Kelly is said to be writing.
There are also rumours that production on the US-based spin-off will begin in December 2025. If that happens, we could see the spin-off sometime in late 2026 or early 2027. Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned for more updates.
