Streaming globally on Netflix from 17th September, ‘Squid Game’ had instantly become a global phenomenon amongst OTT audiences across the world and had consistently topped the most popular Netflix series charts after its launch. Besides, ‘Squid Game’ had also achieved the feat of crossing the coveted 100 million figure in the first 28 days on the Netflix OTT platform. Owing to its positive word-of-mouth and extensive online presence, it had become the buzziest Netflix series title even in India.
And now, after months of rampant speculations and discussions for an obviously potential sequel for ‘Squid Game’, OTT giant Netflix, for the first time, has officially confirmed a second season of the smash-hit show. In the words of Netflix’s co-chief executive officer and chief content officer Ted Sarandos, he has stated during Netflix’s fourth-quarter 2021 earnings interview that there would absolutely be a ‘Squid Game’ second season and that “The Squid Game universe has just begun”, further alluding to a full-fledged Squid Game universe.
Considering the astounding critical and commercial success of the show, it was only a matter of time before an official announcement was made for another season of ‘Squid Game’. Previously, the show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had hinted about the possibility of not only a second season but also about the discussions for a third season for the show.
‘Squid Game’ first season follows the story of 456 people in desperate need of money, who have somewhat failed in their lives, and they are invited to participate in a deadly contest – the survival children’s games called ‘Squid Game’ with a deadly twist. The winner of the game will take home a whopping amount.
