Star-Studded Spy Film ‘Argylle’ Gets An Underwhelming Critics Score

Matthew Vaughn’s star-studded spy action-comedy movie ‘Argylle’ is one of the most anticipated Hollywood films of 2024. The movie will hit the big screens tomorrow and will later start streaming on the Apple TV+ OTT platform.

For the unversed, the film’s director Matthew Vaughn is the man behind some acclaimed films like ‘X-Men: First Class’, the ‘Kingsman’ film series, and ‘Kick-Ass’, etc. So, the expectations from his latest directorial venture ‘Argylle’ are sky high. But has the film lived up to the hype and expectations until now? Let’s find out.

Some of the reviews for ‘Argylle’ are already out before the film’s theatrical release and they are disappointing to say the least. As per reviews aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Argylle’ currently holds a below average critics’ score of just 37% based on 92 reviews so far. So, considering the expectations, it’s an underwhelming critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

For instance, some of the reviewers have said that the problem with the film lies in directorial execution (shocking!), too much CGI, too many twists, etc. But there is some good talk about the performances by Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell. Having said that, there have been many occasions in the past where the Rotten Tomatoes critics’ and audience scores are dramatically different. For ‘Argylle’, the audience verdict will be out very soon!

The basic plot of ‘Argylle’ follows Elly (Bryce Dallas Howard), an introverted author of best-selling spy novels. But while writing her latest espionage novel, she realizes that the plot of her new book, which revolves around secret agent Argylle, has somehow begun to dangerously replicate events in real life and real time.

Besides Bryce Dallas Howard, ‘Argylle’ features a star-studded cast including Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson, amongst others.
