10 days after the final episode of the third season of ‘American Gods’ dropped, Starz cancelled the original show from their network. The fantasy web series was adapted from the 2001 hit fantasy novel of the same name by British author Neil Gaiman. Hours after Starz annoucement, the author and producer, Neil Gaiman went on twitter to assuade hardcore fans with the opening line “It’s definitely not dead” and Fremantle – the production company that made ‘American Gods’ is still very much committed to the show.
‘American Gods’ started losing interest among fans after a lacklustre season 2 and even though season 3 took an interesting turn, it still kept bleeding viewers. Even with a dedicated online cult following, eventually Starz decided that they had enough and decided to remove the original web series from their network. The author and even the star of the show, Ricky Whittle went on to thank the network for airing three seasons.
Currently Fremantle and Neil Gaiman are looking at options to proceed. There have been rumors about an event series or a movie to wrap up the series, but no official confirmation has been provided yet. It will be tough to find another TV network or OTT platform to carry the series, especially in this Covid-hit climate and the bad ratings of the show from its previous network; audiences at home will demand for better content.
But fans of the show can rest easy as Fremantle is still committed to the project. They just need a network to take up the show, for what seems to be the last season of the series, which shouldn’t be impossible. We will just have to wait and see for now.
3 seasons of ‘American Gods’ are available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
