Online streaming sites like Netflix, Prime Video and Hotstar have gained nation wide popularity with its new and exciting content. Especially for youngsters fed up with same old drama on Indian Television, these streaming sites with its diverse content seem like a breath of fresh air.
The trouble is, the companies being Western themselves, the shows on these platforms are also mostly Western. Some of the particularly troublesome shows also have a lot of graphic and sexual content, almost verging on the pornographic.
With no laws or governing body regulating these platforms, even the films and shows on these sites made for Indian audiences are made along the same lines and seem to have similar graphic content and appears to target a particular age group of subscribers.
However, the Supreme Court has appeared to take notice of this phenomena now, after a plea was filed by an NGO, Justice For Rights Foundation regarding this whole issue. The Supreme Court has now sent a notice to the Centre seeking their response on how to regulate these platforms to avoid these issues in the future.
