Sony Pictures and Legendary have announced that the live-action Street Fighter reboot movie is scheduled for a theatrical release on March 30, 2026. However, the reboot project has lost its helmers, Danny and Michael Philippou. The duo is known to direct the acclaimed horror movie, Talk To Me (2022). According to Deadline, the directors are unable to give time to the Street Fighter reboot movie as they are busy developing A24’s next film, titled “Bring Her Back.”
Legendary acquired the live-action movie and TV rights to Street Fighter in April 2023, which itself is a popular video game franchise developed by Capcom. The franchise’s first video game entry came out in 1987, followed by six other games in the main series, and numerous crossovers and spin-offs. As of March 2024, Capcom has sold over 54 million units globally of Street Fighter video games. The most recent instalment, Street Fighter 6, came out on PS5, PS4, PC, and Xbox Series X | S via Steam in June 2023.
The franchise’s prominence soared after the successful release of Street Fighter II (1991), which had outstanding mechanics like special moves, combo attacks, and more. Subsequent entries have added key elements such as enhanced graphics, complex storylines, advanced gameplay features, and new playable characters to the franchise.
Jean-Claude Van Damme led the first-ever live-action Street Fighter movie in 1994, which emerged as a commercial success despite receiving negative reception from viewers. It earned nearly $100 million against a production budget of $35 million. Stay tuned for more updates.
