Sudhir Mishra is a well-known name in the Indian film industry. The National Award-winning filmmaker has directed some critically acclaimed movies such as ‘Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin’, ‘Dharavi’, and ‘Chameli’, etc. But the film which is arguably still considered to be his best work till date as a director is the widely acclaimed 2003 political drama ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’.
Set in the politically charged 1970’s period, the hard-hitting film revolves around three friends (played by Kay Kay Menon, Shiney Ahuja and Chitrangda Singh) and their love triangle set amidst the backdrop of the Indian Emergency. The movie had won two Filmfare Awards for the ‘Best Debut Actor’ category (for Shiney Ahuja) and in the ‘Best Story’ category (for Sudhir Mishra, Shivkumar Subramaniam, and Ruchi Narain).
Considering the accolades and all the critical acclaim which ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’ got, there has been a long-standing and much hoped-for demand from fans and film enthusiasts for the movie’s potential sequel. And it looks like a sequel is very much on the cards. Because, the film’s director Sudhir Mishra has himself expressed his desire and readiness for ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’ sequel.
So, what happened a few hours ago was that Sumit Purohit (Writer – ‘Scam 1992’, ‘Inside Edge’) replied to a Tweet which was basically about three activists / politician namely Umar Khalid, Shehla Rashid, and Kanhaiya Kumar and how their lives have panned out.
Soon after, ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’ director replied to Sumit Purohit’s Tweet with the words “Let’s write it. Pritish is ready”. (Pritish Nandy was the producer of ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’)
Does that mean the ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’ sequel is finally taking off? We can’t say for sure but taking into account Sudhir Mishra and Pritish Nandy’s apparent willingness to revive the project, we hope that it soon will. Moreover, whether the sequel will be based on the lives of Umar Khalid, Shehla Rashid, and Kanhaiya Kumar is also not confirmed. Let’s wait and watch!
