Jio Studios ‘Sumo Didi’ will be premiering at the Tokyo International Film Festival this year. The movie tells the story of India’s only female sumo wrestler Hetal Dave. It has actress Shriyam Bhagnani in the role of Dave. The movie has also been selected to compete in the film festival under the category of Asian Future Section.
Sumo Didi is directed by Jayant Rohtagi and produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Akash Chawla, Arunava Sengupta and Amit Chadrra under the banner of JioStudios.
Hetal Dave is the first and only female Sumo fighter from India and she has made it to the list of World’s 150 Fearless Women. In 2008, her name was recorded by the Limca Book of Records and in 2009, she represented India in World Games. She represented India in various other tournaments and won many awards.
Apart from Shriyam Bhagnani, there will be other actors like Nitesh Pandey, Chaitanya Sharma, and Raghav Dhir in important roles. Shriyam went through rigorous training and weight gain for the preparation of the role. Sumo Didi will be a biopic that will record the story of Hetal’s resilience, training, objections from others and finally rise to prominence.
It has not been revealed when the movie will start to stream, but it is a matter of pride that it is competing in the Tokyo International Film Festival.
