Sundar C’s latest action-comedy Gangers premiered in theatres last month and received a mixed critical response. While the film garnered lukewarm reviews from critics, it fared even worse with general audiences, drawing a rather poor response at the box office. However, it is now gearing up for its OTT release and may get a second chance to find its audience.
Starting today (May 15), Gangers is available to stream on Prime Video in India. The film can be watched in Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi. Much of its success on the digital platform will depend on how viewers respond to it in this new format.
Critics pointed out that while the film’s second half provides some humour and entertainment, Gangers suffers from a messy setup and excessive violence. Many felt the narrative could have been stronger with a tighter plot focused more clearly on the heist elements. Despite its attempt to blend comedy, action, and sentiment, several reviewers remarked that the film felt dated.
The film features a cast led by Sundar C, Vadivelu, Catherine Tresa, Vani Bhojan, and Bagavathi Perumal. Sundar C also co-wrote the screenplay with Venkat Raghavan. The project was jointly produced by Avni Cinemax and Benzz Media (P) Ltd.
Set in a quiet town, the story begins with the disappearance of a young schoolgirl, prompting teacher Sujitha to seek help from the authorities. An undercover police officer begins investigating the case. At the same time, the school’s PT instructor, Singaram, is infatuated with Sujitha—a situation further complicated by the arrival of a new PT teacher, Saravanan, who quickly becomes his rival.
Gangers’ plot then shifts unexpectedly into a heist comedy, as a diverse group of individuals band together to steal a large sum of money from three powerful and menacing brothers who control the town.
