Toad voice actor Keegan-Michael Key has unveiled some intriguing and exciting details about the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 in his recent interview with Men’s Journal. In addition to teasing plenty of Easter eggs, the highly anticipated sequel may feature some deep cuts for many die-hard Nintendo fans.
While speaking about the sequel to 2023’s second-highest-grossing movie, Key revealed that the second part would be “broader in scope,” which makes sense considering how the first film focused heavily on setting up the Mushroom Kingdom and key characters such as Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Luigi (Charlie Day), and Bowser (Jack Black).
Speaking of Bowser, the King of the Koopas should return in the sequel, as the character was indeed one of the best aspects of the first movie.
The original Super Mario Bros. Movie offered many Easter eggs to fans, ranging from retro references to fourth-wall breaks, which is why it will be intriguing to see how Nintendo surpasses fans’ expectations.
Key added, “I feel like what they’ve done creatively is they’ve really widened out the universe that these characters live in and we’re going to meet some new folks. We’re going to meet some new folks that are old favorites and some folks that I think are really deep cuts, but because of the way the story’s laying itself out right now, those characters are going to be very intriguing.”
Meeting some new characters? Who might they be? How about Yoshi, the beloved dinosaur known for his ability to fly and swallow enemies? Alternatively, we might encounter Wario, Mario’s greedy rival. Fans could also see Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2 or Midbus from the Mario & Luigi game series. The possibilities are endless! Stay tuned for more updates.
