Suriya’s ‘Kanguva’: A Lost Opportunity, A Wasted Potential

You walk in the theatre with extremely high expectations for an epic period drama film but the first 20-30 minutes turn out to be disastrously cringe. Now that would be a total mood spoiler, right!

Well that’s what’s happening with Suriya’s ‘Kanguva’. The highly anticipated period drama is not getting the response it would have aspired for and it’s also quite disappointing for the fans who had been eagerly waiting for the much hyped tentpole project.

No doubt Suriya is being praised for his incredible performance and so is the period setting, the art direction, the world building, the VFX and the cinematography. But then it’s also being criticised strongly for the lousy screenplay, the uneven narrative, a clumsy reincarnation angle along with no well defined character arcs and lack of emotional connect. Moreover, people are finding it to be too loud and at times so much that it is becoming almost unbearable.

If these initial public reviews are to be the parameters to judge a film then ‘Kanguva’ is a big failed attempt. With such a huge budget and scale it was expected to be a grand magnum opus but these reactions show a different picture and looks like ‘Kanguva’ is going to be a lost opportunity that had immense potential to go down in cinematic history as one of the best visuals feast.
