Tamil romantic comedy drama ‘Sweetheart!’ released in cinemas last month and will soon complete the four week theatrical window post which people can catch it on OTT. But when and where?
Starring Rio Raj and Gopika Ramesh in lead roles, ‘Sweetheart!’ will start streaming on Jio Hotstar from April 11th, 2025.
Penned and helmed by Swineeth S. Sukumar in his directorial debut, ‘Sweetheart!’ follows Vasu and Manu who meet at a concert and get into a relationship. Soon enough differences in commitment leads to their break up. But in between all this Manu gets grounded after her parents find her in inappropriate condition with Vasu. But then one day, when she calls Vasu to give the news of her pregnancy, everything changes. Will this twist bring a new start or tear these sweethearts apart forever?
Now that looks like a simple narrative but apparently according to some critics’ reviews the screenplay tried a different non-linear kind of approach and that back fired big time. While the attempts were to make ‘Sweetheart!’ a smart, contemporary rom-com, it missed on all fronts quite disappointingly.
With its OTT debut, ‘Sweetheart!’ will try to make up for the disastrous box office run by finding its niche audience and gain some positive feedback. Moreover, the multilingual premiere on Jio Hotstar might be of some help too as it expands the film’s reach.
But that probably isn’t going to be enough. ‘Sweetheart!’s theatrical release was way too silent and hardly does anyone outside the Tamil speaking zone knows about the film. So even if ‘Sweetheart!’ was to find audience on OTT, the lack of buzz makes it almost impossible for it to make any significant impact.
