OTT giant Amazon Prime Video had launched its content streaming services in India way back in December 2016. Besides acquiring third party movies, Amazon Prime Video has been consistently churning out an interesting blend of original Indian titles since the year 2020.
Until recently, Amazon has released 46 original Indian films spanning multiple genres in various Indian languages. Here is the full list of Amazon India original films released until now since 2020 along with the film’s current IMDb rating.

The above information may seem to be random data on a casual viewing. However, if we analyze it from a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) perspective by using IMDb ratings aspect, it might give us a more concrete viewpoint of Amazon’s India original films’ portfolio.
STRENGTHS
As we can observe from the above data, the average IMDb user rating for a total of eleven Amazon India original Malayalam films is an impressive 7.3/10. So, clearly, since the Malayalam film industry rules the roost, Malayalam films can be considered the biggest strength and cornerstone of Amazon’s India original films’ portfolio.
WEAKNESSES
From the above data, it is evident that Hindi films scored the lowest in terms of IMDb rating. Amazon original Hindi films’ average user rating was 5.95, which is quite low. Although it should also be considered that IMDb user rating might sometimes not represent the actual quality of a film due to various reasons such as insufficient number of votes, etc.
OPPORTUNITIES
The Tamil and Telugu film industries present myriad opportunities for Amazon Prime Video because their average Amazon India original films’ IMDb ratings are currently 6.6 and 6.4, respectively, which is decent but could be better. Especially since Amazon has been very wise in its selection of some brilliant films like ‘Soorarai Pottru’, ‘Narappa’, and ‘Sarpatta Parambarai’. This proves that it is thinking in the right direction. Amazon could also rethink its criteria while selecting original Hindi language films as there is obviously no dearth of talented filmmakers in Bollywood.
THREATS
Indian original films from rival OTT giants like Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar can be considered as threats to Amazon’s India original films portfolio. Especially Netflix because it competes closely with Amazon with respect to the number of Indian original films streaming on the platform. Currently, Netflix is streaming 38 original films compared to Amazon Prime Video’s 46, and Netflix has 7 announced titles in the pipeline waiting for release.
