‘Tails’ Spinoff Could Be Next Big Thing In Sonic Franchise

One of the leading voice actors for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, has expressed her interest in starring in a spinoff project centered on her character, Tails.

After debuting in the franchise with the first movie (2020), Tails also appeared in its follow-up, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), and the recently released threequel, which has grossed over $423 million globally so far, making it the highest-grossing entry in the franchise.

Additionally, O’Shaughnessey reprised the iconic character in the Knuckles series on Paramount+.

In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, the actor shared her excitement about the possibility of a potential Tails spinoff project.

“I think you could absolutely do a spin-off with Tails. An origin story for Tails would be amazing, to see where he came from… a little baby Tails. I would love it. Is it of course amazing to have him with Sonic? For sure, because they are you know… a sidekick/hero combination. They work so well together. But I think it would be really neat to see where he came from. Why not?”

O’Shaughnessey is set to reprise her role as Tails in the newly announced Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which will also see the return of Ben Schwartz as the titular anthropomorphic blue hedgehog and Idris Elba as Knuckles, the arrogant and hot-headed red echidna warrior.

Based on the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 post-credits scene, we can also expect Keanu Reeves to return as Shadow in the fourth installment.

A spinoff project focused on Tails doesn’t sound like a bad idea, as she has always been portrayed as Sonic’s sidekick. She deserves a chance to shine in her own spotlight. Such a spinoff could allow for a deeper exploration of her personality, fears, and dreams beyond her role as Sonic’s companion.

Tails is also well-known for her inventiveness. A spinoff could highlight her ingenuity, featuring storylines revolving around her creations—from wacky gadgets to groundbreaking technologies. This could lead to thrilling action sequences and humorous situations. Furthermore, her vibrant and positive energy could attract even more younger fans to the franchise.

A spinoff project based on Tails would undoubtedly be a valuable addition to the Sonic franchise. Not only would it expand the series, but it would also provide a fresh perspective. Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned for more updates.
