After terrorising the Indian film industry for the longest time, the dreaded film piracy website ‘TamilRockers’ now finds itself the subject of an explosive new web series on SonyLIV.
Titled ‘Tamil Rockerz‘, SonyLIV’s Tamil language web series marks the entry of legendary film company, AVM Productions, into the world of OTT entertainment. Not just AVM Productions, Tamil Rockerz will also mark the OTT debut of Tamil star, Arun Vijay, and of director Arivazhagan (Eeram, Kuttram 23).
SonyLIV launched the first trailer for ‘Tamil Rockerz’ this evening, along with the release date for the series. All ten episodes of Tamil Rockerz will release on SonyLIV on August 19, 2022. The series stars Arun Vijay in the lead role of a cop, along with Vani Bhojan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Tharun Kumar, Ishwarya Menon, Vinodhini Vaidyanathan and MS Bhaskar, among others, in crucial roles.
For those who don’t know, TamilRockers is the most notorious piracy website in India, and among the top ten infamous websites in the world. The malicious website is known for streaming pirated versions of Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and even Hollywood movies online, within a few hours of their release in the theatres.
TamilRockers has become a particular nuisance for theatre owners, because of the loss of business entailed by the nefarious activities of the website. Taking action against the website is a tough nut to crack. Authorities are at their wit’s end, trying to stem the menace. As soon as the website and its subsidiaries are taken down, proxy URLs for the sites surface instantly in cyberspace. If the authorities block the sites, they change their domain names and are back in business within a few seconds.
The ‘Tamil Rockerz’ storyline takes into account all of the above. It centres on the dark side of piracy, and its devastating effect on Indian cinema and theatre-owners’ business. Considering all of the above, and going by the trailer, Tamil Rockerz promises a cracker of a thriller worth looking out for. It will be interesting to see how Arivazhagan tackles the subject in his maiden web series.
