The Telugu film industry is slowly recognizing the importance of OTT. The industry big heads are coming up with Original films and shows especially for the OTT and this trend is expected to continue even after the theatrical business is revived. Once the actors also consider it mainstream, there will be no looking back to OTT.
But then, OTT platforms may need to self-regulate themselves about the content they churn out. There are too many expletives, double meaning dialogues, and skin show in the shows and films made especially for OTT. Such strategy has worked elsewhere and the filmmakers are blindly replicating it here.
“OTT is at a nascent stage in Telugu. It needs proper handholding to penetrate into the audience. It is too early to make content targeting a specific group of audience. The filmmakers have to show some restraint while taking that path. They should not be distancing themselves from a major set of audience,” film analysts say. There are demands from sections that censorship should be mandatory for OTT platforms just like how they do for films. If such a situation has become imminent in the future, it will curtail the freedom of filmmaking which is not at all good for the OTT.
