Christopher Nolan’s latest masterpiece ‘TENET’ has been the only big budget film to release during the last few months …with good reason. It being a huge viral pandemic, which is said to likely affect 95% of the world’s population (allegedly). So places of crowd gathering is a big no-no, therefore nearly all theaters around the world had been shut from March till June (depending on the part of the world).
Warner Bros. first pushed the film’s release from it’s initial date of July 17th to July 31st and then finally set it on August 12th. It has been a tumultuous journey for the film, with it releasing Internationally before opening in the US. The film is a critical hit and supposed to be a commercial one, but with theaters still locked/ allowing a certain percentage capacity, the numbers don’t exactly reflect that.
But finally, after 7 weeks, nearly 2 months later, the US box office numbers for the film have crossed 50 million dollars, with the worldwide revenue coming up to 333 million dollars. This is not the huge commercial success the production house was expecting, but considering the situation and the literal lack of no competition, we are pretty sure Warner bros. and Christopher Nolan will take it, for now.
According to reports, the film has currently only made one-third of it’s revenue in the United States, while it’s around two-thirds of expected returns outside of US. ‘TENET’ being a Christopher Nolan is the reason why the film is doing “surprsingly well”. With theaters opening in different states here, and India being one of the biggest market for films, due to the population size; we can expect a resurgence in the film’s revenue count.
Big budget production houses (be it Hollywood, Indian or other) should be looking at ‘TENET’s’ example and be releasing their films. As more time passes by, when the pandemic finally settles down, film makers will be facing two major issues – The heavy interests to pay off for the film loans and heavy competition from other films who will also be trying to earn box office revenue.
