The 1920s when sound was added to live action motion, could be considered one of the greatest decades of Cinema history. The 40s and 50s took the US film noir genre to its peak. The 80s redefined film by introducing brilliant special effects and mind blowing, new film concepts. And now 2010 has followed it up as the next decade to have made an impact in the film industry, but this time not just Hollywood, but worldwide.
Unlike the previous mentioned decades, 2020 has done a lot more to stand out as a decade which redefined cinema, but three main points stand-out as THE Decade Defining Moments In Film History. They are as follows:
Streaming
With the international boom of Netflix and later Amazon Prime Video, streaming platforms have become a regular entertainment staple for movie and television series fans. So much so that a new market has been created by these OTT platforms with each cable network trying to get in on the action. Web-series have become the ‘new films’ now. For those scripts which are slightly long for films have been explored and expanded into small 6-8 hour long mini-series which are binge-watched by OTT consumers.
Inclusion of all races and sexes
Although this was witnessed more predominantly in the second half of the decade, movies like Black Panther, Creed, Wonder Woman, Moonlight, Selma, BlackKklansman, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Hunger Games among many-many others, prove that female and non-Caucasian lead movies can attract audiences world-wide. Even Bollywood featured the female lead storm with films like Raazi, English Vinglish, Queen, NH10, Piku and Mardaani which released in the first half of the decade, getting critical acclaim for both their screenplay and premium acting. This storm has also pushed beyond the screen and into crew like sound & visual effects, cinematography, screenplay writing, executive producing and even directing.
The rise of Superheroes
You guys would definitely have seen this one coming. Sure, brilliant Superhero films like X-men, Spider-man, Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, Iron-man, etc. did come out before the aforementioned decade started. But they were a dime a dozen, especially compared to what is coming out now. Ever since Marvel introduced the first team Superhero movie, where they got Superheroes from their own stand alone films into a new narrative and created their own Cinematic Universe, it created a ripple effect; where production companies quickly bought film rights for other comic books to try and create the same effect. Audiences love Superheroes and the genre has a lot to offer when it comes to untapped story material. Even countries like Russia, UK, China and Germany are trying to capitalize on this Superhero wave.
Of course special mentions have to be given for the CGI department as well. CGI has been brilliant especially in Superhero movies but also for changing people physically. Samuel L. Jackson, Will Smith, Carrie Fischer and Robert De-Niro are few stars who were virtually de-aged in films with varying degrees of success.
Disney also deserves a mention as they brought a lot of beloved animated films to life with a lot of box office success. Not to mention all Marvel Superhero films and the world-wide phenomenon Star Wars also belong to them, making them the richest company making content in the 2010s.
