The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland has teased the impending romance between its two leading characters, Osha (Amandla Stenberg) and Qimir (Manny Jacinto). This Disney+ series is already enduring tons of hate from the Star Wars fanbase for being too “woke” for them. Plus, many of them strongly believe that the series does not fit well with the rest of the canon. There is no denying that the showrunner has made some bold creative choices with the series that are hard to digest for some fans, such as the shocking and brutal deaths of Jecki Lon and the other Jedis in Episode 5. Now, the brewing romance between Osha and Qimir will definitely piss off many fans.
Speaking with Collider, Headland dropped plenty of hints about the growing romance between Osha and Qimir. This is what she said:
“It’s so clear what’s going on. So anybody that’s picking up on it, congrats, awesome. But again, the dynamics had to be what they are after what he did in [Episode] 5. He cannot seem like an alpha male-y, intimidating — we know he’s capable of that from 5 — but that cannot be his dynamic with her. It wouldn’t make sense! We have to see this other side of him, and we have to see specifically the way he is with her. He never let Mae see his face, and he let her see him naked. You know what I mean? The character design was very, very intentional.”
Headland’s comments tease that fans will witness a romantic relationship between Osha and Qimir soon. She also discussed the romance between Rey and Kylo Ren from the sequel trilogy and how that dynamic influenced the connection between Osha and Qimir.
Star Wars’ prominence extends far beyond lightsaber duels, thrilling space battles, and John Williams’ iconic scores. Compelling character arcs, both triumphant and tragic, have resonated with fans for generations. But the thing that strengthened Star Wars’ presence deep into the hearts of fans is the franchise’s memorable romantic relationships. Han Solo and Princess Leia’s love story remains a classic. Anakin and Padme’s bond, brimmed with forbidden love and immense obstacles, ultimately shapes the fate of the galaxy. Even Obi-Wan Kenobi, a near-perfect Jedi Master, possesses a secret love for Duchess Satine Kryze, adding another layer to his complex character.
Headland seems committed to establishing Osha and Qimir as a new addition to Star Wars’ list of beloved couples. However, the reception from the fanbase remains to be seen, considering the mixed reactions towards The Acolyte.
