The Afterparty – Apple’s Latest Is a Refreshing Take on the Murder Mystery Genre

2022 may be the year when Apple TV+ goes mainstream. It has already made its presence felt with award winning shows like ‘Ted Lasso’ and the popular ‘The Morning Show (TMS)’. While audiences wait for Ted Lasso and TMS to return for a third season, Apple TV+ released glimpses of various shows, at the Television Critics Association (TCA) winter press tour, that are expected to release during this year.

These shows have a strong line-up of actors such as the likes of Uma Thurman, Gary Oldman, Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway. One of the more recent shows to have dropped on the service is ‘The Afterparty‘. This show is from Academy Award winners Christopher Miller and Phil Lord.

4 episodes of the show have dropped with new episodes releasing every Friday. The plot involves a high school reunion’s afterparty which ends in a stunning death with everyone at the party a suspect. It is a comedy ‘whodunit’ with each suspect explaining their version of the events of the night.

Each episode, until now, has focussed on one version of the story presented in a different genre. For example, episode 1 is narrated as a romantic comedy whereas episode 3 is a musical.

We have seen various shows and movies where the same event is narrated from different vantage points. The risk with such a format is that it could become repetitive. By presenting it in different genres, ‘The Afterparty’ seems to have tackled that problem successfully. The creators have surely reimagined the genre.

The cast of the show – with Tiffany Haddish and John Early as the detectives – include various comic actors. The line-up of the show is surely fun.

The first 4 episodes have begun on a strong footing. So, do check this latest comedy from Apple TV+. It seems like a joyride
