Well, this comes as a surprise, and one wouldn’t have known it if it wasn’t for Ted Sarandos, Content Chief of Netflix. It was cited as an example, by him, of content that needs to be avoided in future. It is the biggie Triple Frontier headed by Ben Affleck.
Netflix is not the one to shy away from the budget for any genre, and it has been doing so from the start. It has been putting money in content which is many times rejected at other places but has a good following. With a similar approach, many series and movies have found a new life on its platform. The question, however, remains, are they working for Netflix and with no data available one cannot say with authenticity.
But, when reports emerge like the recent one, which suggests Netflix is taking a cautious approach for sanctioning bigger budgets, one can’t help but think if all is well. The competition sure must be a factor here to go slow and not pour money on any project that looks big on paper.
The interesting thing to note here is that, a few months ago, the Ben Affleck starrer was listed among the top viewed titles on debut. If it still is deemed as a flop by the content execs and if they don’t want such subjects going forward, it makes one wary of the data that is revealed by them too. As long as there is no transparency, doubts like these will inevitably raise.
