This showed that how in the OTT market people preferred content over stardom.
While there were many shows and movies which became a success this year, there has to be a topper who secured the best ranks among others and here we’ll talk about one blockbuster movie and web series which landed in 2020. Let’s start off!
Web Series :- Scam 1992 – The Harshad Mehta Story (SonyLIV)
Like there can be any other show which can top the charts like Scam 1992 did this year! The biographical crime drama show came out on SonyLIV and had all the attention towards itself since its trailer dropped. The story focuses on the famous stockbroker of the 90s era – Harshad Mehta, who was also known as “The Big Bull” in his prime days. It showcases, that how Mehta used a loophole in the Indian financial system and pulled off a scam worth ₹5000 crores.
With the brilliant acting by all the cast members, it was the show by Pratik Gandhi who lead such a stellar starcast with his fantastic performance as Harshad Mehta, and deserves all the applause he’s been getting. Shreya Dhanwanthary too cemented her status with the role of the journalist Sucheta Dalal who was the one that brought out this scam in public.
With dialogues like “Risk Hai Toh Ishq Hai”, “Mehta Na Raaj Ma Market Maja Ma”, and several others, the series is in the mind and hearts of the people who still quote the dialogue in conversations, meaning that the show has become a sensational hit in Indian industry. The ten part show has been directed by Hansal Mehta and is available on SonyLIV.
Movie : Soorarai Pottru (Amazon Prime Video)
There was a talk going in the industry regarding the dismal returns by the films of big stars in the OTT platforms and how the star factor doesn’t work in these platforms. And seeing how badly big films performed didn’t exactly boosted the confidence of Suriya fans as his film ‘Soorarai Pottru’ was slated to arrive on Amazon Prime Video.
The movie’s journey like its plot is nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. Soorarai Pottru became part of several controversies up to its release and came out with “flying” colours. It became one of the certified hits not only for Amazon Prime Video but also gave a sigh of relief for the other streaming platforms which have big films lined up for future. ‘Soorarai Pottru’ is based on the life of ‘Air Deccan’ founder G.R. Gopinath and stars Suriya in the lead role of Maara.
With the emotional journey displayed by the Sudha Kongara directorial, needless to say Soorarai Pottru was the talking point of the town for weeks as the movie became a hit both among masses and classes alike. Critics also favoured the movie and garnered it with positive reviews.
Soorarai Pottru also starred :- Paresh Rawal, Urvashi, Aparna Balamurali, Mohan Babu, Vivek Prasanna and others in crucial roles. With no big movie set to arrive this year, it is safe to say that Soorarai Pottru has been the biggest OTT blockbuster movie released in 2020.
