The Diplomat Heads To Streaming: Can OTT Turn Its Fate Around?

John Abraham’s The Diplomat is all set to premiere on Netflix on May 9 at 1:30 PM IST. This gripping political thriller could enjoy a highly successful OTT release after experiencing a lukewarm response in theatres.

Despite earning mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences, The Diplomat failed to perform strongly at the box office, managing to earn only INR 52–53 crore during its entire theatrical run. With its Netflix release, new viewers and fans of John Abraham now have the opportunity to watch the movie from the comfort of their homes.

Abraham plays Indian diplomat J.P. Singh in this Shivam Nair-directed film. The political thriller is set against the tense backdrop of Islamabad, Pakistan. In addition to the leading man, the movie stars Kumud Mishra, Sadia Khateeb, Sharib Hashmi, Revathy, Ashwath Bhatt, Vishal Vashishtha, Jagjeet Sandhu, and more.

However, things are not looking easy for the latest John Abraham starrer, as it will face direct competition from Ajith Kumar’s Good Bad Ugly, which releases a day earlier on May 8.

Moreover, The Royals, starring Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar, will also premiere on May 9. While it is a TV series, it could still draw a substantial number of viewers away from The Diplomat’s OTT debut, potentially hurting the movie’s performance on Netflix in the long term.

The Diplomat centers on J.P. Singh, an Indian diplomat whose life takes an unexpected turn when Uzma Ahmed, an Indian woman seeking refuge, arrives at the embassy. Uzma claims she was abducted to Pakistan, forced into marriage, and abused. Singh faces the complex task of navigating international diplomacy and Pakistan’s legal system, amidst pressure from both governments, to help Uzma safely return to India. Stay tuned for more updates.
