Regional cinema has been going under the radar for quite some time despite the quality of unique content that it possesses. The OTT platforms have helped such hidden gems get a bigger platform where a global audience can now view them with relative ease. The Disciple is one such gem that will be coming to Netflix.
The Disciple is written and directed by Chaitanya Tamhane and takes us on a musical journey across the land. The film has an exemplary cast of Aditya Modak, Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave, Deepika Bhide Bhagwat among others. The Disciple is produced by Vivek Gomber.
The Disciple won a lot of praise for its theme and beautifully crafted storyline. It also won the award for best screenplay at the 77th Venice Film Festival.
The Disciple takes us on a journey of a classical vocalist who has an unadulterated devotion to his craft with an unwavering dedication to it. It is the story of Sharad Nerulkar who is an Indian classical vocalist and is fighting hard to achieve his goal in a contemporary city that never seems to sleep or rest. In essence, it is the story of an artist who becomes obsessed with his art in search of that all-powerful bliss that comes from a state of flow. The Disciple can also be compared to other such titles like ‘Whiplash’ and ‘Black Swan’. Though these comparisons may be a bit far-fetched they all have the same central theme.
The Disciple will stream on Netflix on 30th April.
