OTT platforms are meant to be subscribed to. They require a sum of money in order to provide us with entertainment not only with licensed films but also original programming.
But we were lucky to have some OTT platforms that offered us free entertainment. Even today, a lot of licensed films on Disney+Hotstar and Zee5 don’t require a subscription. But platforms like Jio Cinema and MX Player didn’t ask for any penny at all. While the latter streamed some ads, Jio Cinema was flawless and free.
But looks like the good days are now over. Binged informed its readers that Jio Cinema has launched its pricing and will soon be a paid streaming platform just like Netflix, Prime Video, and others.
Also, there are high chance that MX Player will meet the same fate. Because Amazon has purchased MX Player for an extremely affordable price. According to some reports, the deal closed at less than 400 crores.
Needless to say, Amazon is less likely to continue the free streaming. Shows like Aashram and Matsya Kaand are one of the most watched shows on MX Player. They are popular amongst fans and they might be ready to pay a nominal fee for them.
The deal between Amazon and MX Player will be finalised with paper works until June 30. We may get a further report only after that. Let’s see how it goes.
