Ladies and gentlemen! Get ready to get another brainless action flick in the form of ‘The Expendables 4’. Lionsgate has announced that the fourth Expendables entry will hit the theatres on September 22, 2023.
The franchise revolves around a group of highly-skilled mercenaries who are experts in carrying out all sorts of missions. Assassination? Want to rescue someone? They are there for you! All they want in return are handsome amounts of money. We have seen CIA agents like Bruce Willis’ Mr Church and Harrison Ford’s Mr Drummer asking for their help to do the agency’s dirty work in the previous entries.
But the biggest question is this: “Do we really need another Expendables entry”?
The film series has served as a satisfying visual treat for diehard action lovers. But it heavily relies on the popularity of its veteran cast. Plus, it doesn’t offer anything new or refreshing to the viewers.
The Expendables 4 already seems like a misfire from Lionsgate. How? Well, we have The Raid fame, Iko Uwais, as the primary antagonist in the film. And he will play the character of a former military officer turned arms dealer. He also has a small army of his own. His character looks like a recycled version of all the villains that have appeared in previous entries. So, there is nothing new here.
Plus, we have Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Jacob Scipio, Andy Garcia, and Levy Tran as new faces. Honestly, we should not expect too much from these individuals.
Poor plots and dialogues have turned out to be the franchise’s biggest flaws. So, we should not expect to get a ‘creative’ or ‘sensational’ storyline in the forthcoming entry as well.
The first two Expendables films were at least watchable. But the last entry (2014) was a complete disaster. Apart from bestowing a lame villain, it failed at taking full advantage of its talents. Mel Gibson, Kelsey Grammer, and Arnold Schwarzenegger were nominated for their ‘outstanding’ supporting roles at the 35th Golden Raspberry Awards, with Grammer winning the Razzie.
Scott Waugh will helm the fourth entry. He is known to direct disastrous flicks like Act of Valor (2012) and Need for Speed (2014).
Lionsgate will drop The Expendables 4 on September 22, 2023. Stay tuned for more updates.
