The Fall Season Asserted Massive Dominance on Netflix!

Imagine the first half of the year. Well, you don’t need to because we are living in it. Scorching summer, less holidays and most importantly scorching summer (yeah, twice).

Imagine the second half of the year. It begins with scorching summer but ultimately cools down to beautiful winters. We Indians get holidays from Navratri to Chhath Puja. The west celebrates the fall season. And both the hemispheres are more at ease.

The fall season has consistently proven to be a peak period for viewership on Netflix, and the latter half of 2023 was no exception. The data from Netflix’s latest engagement report reveals that the second half of the year attracted huge global attention, with several key titles drawing millions of views.

One of the standout films was the dystopian thriller “Leave the World Behind,” which became the most-watched title on Netflix globally in the latter half of 2023. With 121 million views in just over three weeks since its release in December, it went on to become Netflix’s fifth most popular movie of all time.

Comparatively, subscribers worldwide watched approximately 90 billion hours of Netflix in the second half of 2023, slightly less than the 93 billion hours in the first half. Despite this small drop in overall hours, the prominence of specific titles during the fall season indicates the importance of the fall season.

On the TV side, the anime-inspired live-action series “One Piece” led with nearly 72 million views. The limited series “Who Is Erin Carter?” and the third part of “Lupin” also performed exceptionally well, with over 50 million and 49.7 million views, respectively. L

Reality TV included Squid Game: The Challenge, spin-off of the hit Korean series, garnered 33 million views and also increased the viewership of the original series by 34%.

Licensed titles too were no exception. The legal drama “Suits” achieved an impressive 144 million views across its nine seasons.

The consistent release of blockbuster films, engaging TV series, and beloved licensed titles during the latter half of the year appears to be a deliberate strategy by Netflix. We believe it is a good strategy as nothing good can be fully enjoyed in this summer (joking).
