The Gentlemen on Netflix: Guy Ritchie’s Comeback to the Small Screen?

As per an exclusive Deadline report, Netflix is in negotiations for a green light to ‘The Gentlemen’ series, an adaptation of the 2019 movie by Guy Ritchie. The show’s pilot has been written by Ritchie along with Matthew Read. Ritchie is also said to direct the first two episodes and serve as an executive producer on the series which Miramax TV and Moonage Pictures will produce.

There were reports, a few months ago, about Miramax attempting to develop The Gentlemen TV show based on their movie. Marc Helwig, since joining Miramax as Head of Television in 2020, has been attempting to adapt Miramax’s extensive film library into a TV series. The Gentlemen was originally pitched as a TV show and it seems to be destined for television.

With Netflix close to approving it, the TV show may finally come through. But as the latest report suggests, negotiations are still on, and nothing is confirmed as of now. If a breakthrough happens, this could mark Guy Ritchie’s comeback to television after two decades. Guy Ritchie was last involved in a TV show called ‘Lock, Stock…’ which he had created and co-written and released in 2000. Lock Stock, too, was a spin-off from Guy Ritchie’s 1998 movie – Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

The Gentlemen is an action-comedy film written, directed and produced by Guy Ritchie, who developed the story along with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies. The film cast included the likes of Matthew McConaughey, Jeremy Strong, Colin Farell and Hugh Grant. It released in January 2020. The movie received mixed reviews and did reasonably ok at the box office. It grossed $115 million worldwide against its $22 million budget.

The movie was released recently and although it was well received, it wasn’t a blockbuster for fans to be excited about a TV show based on it. However, Guy Ritchie’s involvement will certainly get the buzz around. Also, with Netflix interested, there must be something going right for the proposed show. Fans will be curious to see how it turns out if and when the show releases.
