The Russo Brothers are busy promoting the upcoming Netflix release, The Gray Man, these days. With a budget of $200 million, it is the streaming giant’s most expensive project to date. The film stars Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Dhanush, Wagner Moura, and many more performers. Also, the duo of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely has received the screenwriting credits for this one. Both Markus and McFeely are known for their outstanding work on various MCU projects. No doubt that the future of The Russo Brothers’ directional career relies heavily on the forthcoming Netflix action thriller.
The brotherly duo of Anthony and Joe Russo has helmed nine films including The Gray Man. They commenced their journey in Hollywood with Pieces (1997). The movie caught Steven Soderbergh’s attention and he offered the duo a chance to helm Welcome to Collinwood (2002). However, it was MCU’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) that changed their luck in Hollywood.
But here’s the thing! Apart from their Marvel projects, The Russo Brothers have not yet done anything remarkable in the world of cinema. Their last release, Cherry, had Tom Holland as the protagonist. But their weak direction made the Apple TV+ release nothing more than a ‘stylish but hollow’ watching experience. There is no denying that the brotherly duo needs to make its name outside the boundaries of the superhero world. And now, they have a perfect chance to prove their worth with The Gray Man.
Netflix dropped The Gray Man’s trailer about a month ago. It received a pretty strong positive response from the viewers. Many of them believe that The Russo Brothers and the cast will do complete justice to Mark Greaney’s novel of the same name. Plus, the streaming platform has high hopes for this one after Red Notice’s terrible critical reception.
The very first thing that favours The Russo Brothers is their expertise in handling hand-to-hand combat sequences. All the MCU projects directed by the duo are the epitome of this scenario. We can expect the same from The Gray Man as well. Additionally, they had an entirely new cast to play with except Chris Evans. The duo’s chemistry with the actor is just brilliant. They must have utilised their chemistry with the actor apart from exploring other characters in the movie. And most importantly, the overall humour in the film looks good. One of the reasons why Russos’ Marvel entries performed so brilliantly is that all of them entertained the viewers with quality comedy despite treasuring hard-hitting storylines.
The Gray Man, helmed by The Russo Brothers, will arrive on Netflix on July 15. Stay tuned for more updates.
