The Great Divide Between Books and Screen Adaptation

Novels, an escape from reality. A safe place where readers can hide themselves. But, how do you feel when one of your favourite stories gets adapted into a movie? And, what is your first thought when you see that it has no resemblance with the actual story?

Something like this is happening right now in Bollywood as well as in Hollywood. Since the very beginning of cinema novel adaptations have been one of the main sources for movies.

But, long ago when adaptations used to happen it used to have a perfectly organised storyline, which were very much accurate with the original novel but recently bending the storyline and moulding it to a certain preference became such a thing, which loses the actual essence of the storyline.

If we talk about Bollywood, recently Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Heeramandi” became a global sensation, but if we dive into Bhansali’s earlier works then we’ll see this pattern of moulding the story to such extent, that it becomes a complete different story.

If we talk about “Devdas” which is an adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel with the same name. In the movie it has been shown that Chandramukhi and Parvati are conversing while in the novel, Parvati never found Chandramukhi at all although she investigated a lot for her.

Now, this altered the whole function of the movie.

Similarly in many Hollywood movies we see this trend of alerting the story line. If we take the “Harry Potter Series” under consideration then we’ll understand that continuing the legacy with “The Cursed Child” was an unnecessary addition.

Recently in “Dune Part Two” a major part has been removed from the main story, which was “Alia” ‘s role (Paul’s sister).

Now, novels and movies both of them are different mediums and to make it more visually pleasing directors can have their creative freedom, but if one jeopardizes the original plot line and claims that it’s the exact story then that is doing injustice to the main story.

It happens every time that a novel is being adapted and it ended up a trash piece of cinema.

Now both the sides of the coin is lovely because both are a source of entertainment and a refuge from reality.
