The news reports regarding a Malayalam movie being made regarding the disastrous Kerala floods have been on for some time now. Finally, the movie’s official teaser is out for the public. It is gritty, real and catastrophic and is the reminder of a time of destruction and resurrection.
The 2018 Kerala floods were the worst flood faced by the state in nearly a century. The unprecedented amount of rainfall received at the time left the government with no other option but to open the shutters of the dams lest they break and cause further destruction. This led to floods that reportedly affected at least one-sixth of the population of Kerala directly. From falling trees to damaged electric lines to landslides to unavailability of telecom in certain areas, 2018 is not a year Malayalis will forget. And it is on this disaster that Jude Anthany Joseph’s next titled ‘2018’ will be about.
The movie has a star-studded cast including big names like Tovino Thomas, Kunchako Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, and Aparna Balamurali amongst others. Set in a dark tone, the teaser was successful in depicting the uncertainty, helplessness and confusion that the people faced.
From the looks of the short clip, the movie is an authentic portrayal of the happenings, mostly because the cast and the crew live through it. It reminds us of the 2019 movie ‘Virus’ since the film too was a fictional take on the real event that happened in the state -the Nipah Outbreak, which too happened in 2018, a few months before the floods. Like the latter, ‘2018’ is also expected to be a heart-wrenching film on the events.
The movie starts with a flooded road, and on the road are a bus and a boat. An indication of the superheroes then, it was the fishermen who led the fight for survival amidst the treacherous weather with their boats and ores, unafraid for their own safety. From the quick actions of the State government and public servants to rescue missions undertaken by common people, the teaser is a mirror of the never-forgettable past.
With the tagline ‘Everyone is a hero’, the movie is touted to be a theatrical experience. Written by director Jude of ‘Ohm Shanthi Oshaana’ fame, the movie is produced by Kavya Film Company. For prompt updates regarding the film like its release date, stay tuned to Binged.
