The making of the fifth installment of the Indian Jones film franchise is in full swing. As per a recent report, ‘The Mask of Zorro’ actor Antonio Banderas has joined the star-studded cast of yet untitled Indian Jones movie. Besides obviously Harrison Ford in the lead role, the film would also reportedly feature ‘Hannibal’ actor Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Walle-Bridge, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, and Toby Jones, amongst others.
The first four Indiana Jones films were created by George Lucas and directed by legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg. Whereas the fifth movie is being helmed by James Mangold, who is the man behind films like Logan, The Wolverine, Knight and Day, and Walk the Line, etc.
What role would the latest cast addition Antonio Banderas will be playing, and the film’s precise plot is being kept under the wraps by the makers. (Spoilers ahead) However, some recent set photos revealed that at least some part of the film would be set during the period when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s return to Earth from the historic moon landing. And that period was the year 1969. (Spoilers end).
The Indiana Jones franchise started off with Raiders of the Lost Ark that released in the year 1981. The next film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom came out in 1984. While Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade got its release five years later. The last film in the series Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull got a theatrical release in the year 2008 and was set in the year 1957.
Although the fourth film was not able to meet the sky-high expectations of the earlier three films by many diehard franchise fans. Whether the upcoming fifth installment would meet or perhaps even surpass the expectations remains to be seen.
Indiana Jones 5 is expected to release in theatres on 29th July 2022.
