A few weeks ago, I wanted to start a new TV show. I opened one streaming platform after another browsing all the genres and lists recommended to me but finding no interest in any of them. I was stuck in this loop until one hour later I just gave up and resorted to re-watching The Office.
That’s when I realized we are stuck in a paradox of too many choices.
In the 70’s and 80’s, there were hardly two or three channels on black and white TVs that only ran the same list of movies each week but fast forward to current times we have at least 10 major streaming services each containing hundreds of TV shows and movies in every genre imaginable at the tip of our fingers.
Everything is so accessible to us that we don’t actually pause and consider the magnitude of content that these platforms provide us year after year.
There are so many viewers who are looking for the most engaging, gripping content to watch to fulfil their desire to be distracted from the mundane realities of life.
But this desire has ultimately left them paralysed because the supply is being produced at a far greater rate than the demand can be consumed.
Making the lives of these viewers even harder are the OTT platforms who are fiercely competing amongst each other vying for more and more subscribers each. They use all kinds of marketing tactics and attractive offers to entice viewers to watch their exclusive shows and original movies.
Each time a viewer opens a platform, the OTT service bombards them with top ten lists, trending shows, recommendations on basis of your preferences and so much more and if someone just wants to unwind and relax; the stress of deciding can lead into a spiral of confusion and frustration.
What usually ends up happening is that viewers either switch off completely or resort to watching old favourites which provides a comfort level while still being entertained.
This lonesome pursuit of choosing the “ideal” show is actually an attempt to just ease ourselves and the more we have, the more we want.
But choosing your next TV show or movie shouldn’t be this hard so next time you find yourself in this dilemma just pause and really consider what you are looking for or if you’re looking for an easier way just log onto binged.com to find your perfect next binge.
